Commemorating the Pan-European Picnic

Dear Students,

as you probably know, we celebrated the foundtaion of the Hungarian state yesterday, on 20th August. But this event was not the only one to remember in the past days: we also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Pan-European Picnic.

The Pan-Europen Picnic was a peaceful demonstration on the Austrian-Hungarian border, near Sopron on 19 August 1989. Part of the Revolutions of 1989 leading to the lifting of the Iron Curtain and the reunification of Germany. The event was organised by the Paneuropen Union and the Hungarian Democratic Forum as part of the revolutions.

This year we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the dissolution of the Iron Curtain. 1989 was a life-changing year in the Eastern/Central European region, when, after 30 years of Soviet occupation, the chance came for Central European nations to become independent along with the emerging hope to unite Europe.

This year, after meeting and having talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, our Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán noted that Germany is Hungary’s top investor and trading partner and that their talks focus point was the economic relation between the two countries.
